Social media is great at making parents feel miserable with quotes like You only have 18 summers and so on. I say do not believe it, parenthood doesn't have an expiry date. The love and the joy only becomes deeper with time. Like with any meaningful relationship, it's worth celebrating and enjoying. As an artist it takes a lot of mental and physical energy to be constantly present and open to the people you meet. And you need this vulnerability to be able to create art. Honest art.
And why would anyone put themselves in a situation of being vulnerable over and over? Maybe because the urge to create art comes from a need that needs to be fulfilled. The need is bigger than the constant second guessing. It fulfils but most importantly it heals. Family shoots have a very special place in my heart for that reason. In these photos, I am THAT child. To be able to see your roots, your tribe, all there for YOU, always there to catch you, to love you, to just BE THERE. There's so much power in that, it's the most wonderful gift you can show to our child. More of that in 2023, please!
